The Luke Challenge: Day 7

What's the Luke Challenge?

The Luke Challenge is a 24-day journey through the Gospel of Luke to prepare our hearts for Christmas. We invite you to read 1 chapter of Luke with us daily from December 1st to Christmas Eve.

John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say, "Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way before you." - ‭‭Luke‬ ‭7‬:‭27‬ ‭(NLT)‬‬

Day 7 Takeaway

Well, well, well. Remember the kids complaining instead of playing on day 5? See verses 31 and 32 today. I love Jesus! Luke 7 is one of my favorite chapters in the whole Bible.

“John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say, ‘Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, and he will prepare your way before you.’”

‭‭Luke‬ ‭7‬:‭27‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Here we have it. The original Advent poster child: John the Baptist. On social media we predominantly see all the beautiful wins in life without the work and the ait. Advent is special. Here, we celebrate the wait. John did not sit around feeling sorry for himself because his cousin was Jesus. He didn’t claim to be or try to be anything he wasn’t.

Maybe John understood something about the waiting because of how his mom waited for him to be born or because of how his dad had to wait to even say a word until his birth. These words that Jesus Himself says about John remind us that when we are waiting for Him, it is always worth it.

I find it fascinating that a social media trend is asmr (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response). It’s basically short videos that have sounds of normal life. Like the sound of paper being torn, liquid being poured, veggies being cut. We move so quickly sometimes to get to where we are going that we miss the sounds in our own lives. Our infatuation with these little sounds in the lives of strangers gives me great hope for humanity. Perhaps it will cause us to slow down and enjoy the sounds we crave from our own actual experiences when we don’t just rush through them.

The Luke Challenge gives us permission to celebrate more without needing more to celebrate. Go light a candle, rustle some paper, take some deep breaths, pour some water, and enjoy.
