What's the Luke Challenge?
The Luke Challenge is a 24-day journey through the Gospel of Luke to prepare our hearts for Christmas. We invite you to read 1 chapter of Luke with us daily from December 1st to Christmas Eve.
Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the Bridegroom fast while He is with them?" - Luke 5:34 (NIV)
Day 5 Takeaway
We have miracles, healings, financial breakthrough all over day five. Notwithstanding, of course, accusations in the form of questions from the proud. What sounds like revival to me is interrupted with “why don’t Your followers fast?” I picture a child seeing another child get a gift and saying “that’s not fair!” Instead of playing with the gifted one, the short-sighted child just crosses his arms and pouts when all the while, they could be friends and play together.
It sounds a little familiar, doesn’t it? “That’s not fair!" aka "Why aren’t Your followers fasting?”
Jesus, flawless as always,
“Can you make the friends of the Bridegroom fast while He is with them?”
There is much to unpack in this gift of a verse… it almost sounds like Jesus is defending His followers and His love for us. As if to say, “I don’t just give them orders to change their behavior. They are my friends. They want to be here.”
May we remember no one is forcing us to be here. His arrival on earth is the ultimate invitation for us to have a real relationship with God. He didn’t come to make things fair or to be a controlling dictator who enslaves us to His demands. Some might even say (in light of His response), that He came - Emanuel, God With Us - to make friends.
