The Luke Challenge: Day 3

What's the Luke Challenge?

The Luke Challenge is a 24-day journey through the Gospel of Luke to prepare our hearts for Christmas. We invite you to read 1 chapter of Luke with us daily from December 1st to Christmas Eve.

John replied, “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.” - ‭‭Luke‬ ‭3‬:‭11‬ ‭(NLT‬‬)

Day 3 Takeaway

Oh how I love the simplicity, sobriety, and directness of John the Baptist. When he came loudly preaching in the wilderness, crowds gathered. And, wild as he was, people wanted more. They asked him what they were supposed to do because he gently told them like dead trees they could be cut down by the axe of God.

His response:

John replied, “If you have two shirts, give one to the poor. If you have food, share it with those who are hungry.” - ‭‭Luke‬ ‭3‬:‭11‬ ‭(NLT‬‬)

On this third day of the Luke Challenge, I am reminded of the third day of creation. It was the day God made trees.

Trees from which humanity fell,

trees that produce fruit to eat,

trees cut down for lumber and tools,

trees carved into idols,

trees burned for fire,

trees lit beautifully with bows and gifts,

trees that made three crosses on a hill.

As you choose, cut, or unbox your tree this year, reflect on the Man who gave His life for ours. Oh! And if you have two shirts, give one to the poor. (It’s cold out there!)
